Crownies Of Lowestoft

The steam trawler fleet of Consolidated Fisheries

Crownies of Lowestoft reflects upon the large fleets of steam trawlers that existed in the great days of the British fishing industry. In particular, the book focuses on the Lowestoft fleet owned by the Consolidated Steam Fishing & Ice Co. Ltd., and the successor, Consolidated Fisheries Ltd.

For many years recognised as being the largest fishing company in the world, the Consolidated has become legendary in the history of the fishing industry. The Company operated fleets from a number of British ports, and from 1920 until 1955, the Consolidated played a major role in the local economy. It was responsible for the great majority of the white fish landed locally during that period, and also provided much employment in their vessels and supporting industries, for a substantial number of people.

The Consolidated steam trawlers that worked out of Lowestoft originally came from other fishing ports, with the majority coming from Grimsby. Crownies of Lowestoft contains an overview of this Grimsby based Company and the history of their Lowestoft operation, together with the detailed history of over 70 Consolidated vessels which operated from the port. Details of the one diesel powered trawler and the steam colliers in the Lowestoft Consolidated fleet are included.

A unique publication, Crownies of Lowestoft is very reasonably priced at £7.50. The book contains 72 pages and has over 60 historic views of these impressive vessels, many of which were built in the late 1890s. ISBN 09532485 3 4.

Crownies of Lowestoft is strictly a limited edition with only 1200 copies available. Each book will be individually labelled, signed and numbered. Included on the label is the date of publication.
